Despite widespread knowledge that asbestos was dangerous Many of our hospitals and schools in the UK were built during the 1960’s and 1970’s. Despite widespread knowledge that asbestos was dangerous at this time, it was still regularly used within the building industries.

As a result, many schools and hospitals still house large quantities of asbestos whether it be in the lagging of the pipes, boilers or used as tiles in the ceiling or walls.

Figures seen by the BBC suggest that asbestos is still present in nearly nine out of ten schools in the UK. This is higher than previous official estimates.

If asbestos is managed safely and left undisturbed it may not cause a problem however, many parents and members of the public are worried for their safety and the safety of their children.
