Unfair Treatment of Ex-Servicemen Suffering from Mesothelioma
Did you know that a loop hole in the law means that ex-service personnel are being denied large sums of compensation compared to civilians with the same illness as in many cases, as it is not possible to sue the Ministry of Defence for exposure to Asbestos before 1987.
Many argue that this current approach taken by Government for compensating veterans who developed this particularly aggressive terminal cancer must be changed.
Madeleine Moon MP, a member of the Commons Defence Select Committee stated that the MoD is “….Exploiting a legal technicality to avoid paying fair and proportionate compensation.”
The MoD have responded by stating “We are currently considering whether a lump sum can be provided for future Mesothelioma Claimants. The Government places great importance on the health and wellbeing of our veterans and we are absolutely committed to treating them fairly.”
Mesothelioma is a fatal condition and many people only have 6 months left to live from the date of diagnosis. The fact that our ex-servicemen are being treated in this way is truly a scandal.
